May 15 is National Hispanic Hepatitis Awareness Day, which is a collective movement aimed at educating and mobilizing Hispanic/Latino communities throughout the United States, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Island to increase their awareness and knowledge of viral hepatitis and its high prevalence in our communities. NVHR advocate Ivette Chavez-Gonzalez shares her experience advocating within the Hispanic and Latino Communities in Buffalo, New York.
In 2018, New York State made the commitment to eliminate hepatitis C in the state. Since then, all restrictions and prior authorization requirements have been eliminated to increase patient access to hepatitis C treatment. But while it may have gotten easier to get treatment, for the Hispanic and Latino communities – especially in Buffalo – barriers still exist.
My journey with hepatitis C started about six years ago when I was first diagnosed. At the time, I was on my path to recovery from substance use, which had also led me to become HIV positive. I was working and lucky enough to have insurance to help cover treatment, but there was an incredible amount of red tape and complicated paperwork that almost led me to abandon treatment efforts. Thankfully Evergreen Health Services, where I was seeking care, helped me navigate the overly complex insurance process and got me on direct acting-antivirals. A few weeks later I was cured, and I am now proud to say that I am a hepatitis C survivor.
But the insurance barriers, paperwork, and lack of accessible information is often too much for hepatitis C patients from the Latino communities of Western New York. In addition to the stigma and treatment barriers hep C patients regularly face, Latino communities also often face a language barrier. There is not always information available in Spanish, nor is there always an available interpreter or Spanish-speaking clinician to help explain the impact of hepatitis C and steps needed to cure it. These barriers mean that too many hepatitis C patients are not getting the care that they need.
That’s why I started getting more involved and now serve as a Peer Outreach Navigation Worker with Evergreen Health. In my role, I help ensure that everyone in the Buffalo area that is looking for hepatitis C care can get screened and can understand next steps for treatment. It’s vital that we identify opportunities to improve linkage to care for all hepatitis C patients, but especially those in the Latino communities. Only then will we be able to eliminate hepatitis C in New York.

En 2018, el Estado De Nueva York se comprometió a eliminar Hepatitis C en el estado. Desde entonces todas las restricciones y autorización previa han sido eliminadas para que el paciente tenga mas facilitación para el tratamiento de Hepatitis C. Pero mientras se a echo mas fácil recibir el tratamiento para la comunidades Hispana y Latina – especial en la ciudad de Buffalo – las barreras aun existen.
Mi historia con Hepatitis C comenzó mas o menos 6 anos atrás. Para ese tiempo ya estaba en camino para recuperación de uso de substancia cual también me causo ser positive para el HIV. La suerte mía fue que estaba trabajando y tenia segura medico cual me ayudo a cubrir el tratamiento. Pero ubo inconvenientes y complicaciones con formularios que casi me causa que yo abandonara todo el esfuerzo de tratamiento. Pero gracias a Evergreen Health Services, donde me estaban tratando para doctor primario. Ellos me ayudaron a navegar y completar el proceso para tratamiento. Unas cuantas semanas después ya estaba curada. Hoy en día estoy muy contenta de decir que me cure de hepatitis C.
Pero los obstáculos, los Papeles, y la poca información con los seguros muchas veces es mucho para los pacientes de hepatitis C en la comunidad Latina de Western New York. En adicional los problemas la stigma y tratamiento de hepatitis C que los pacientes enfrentan. No siempre hay información en español disponibles ni personal para traducir o personal que hable español para ayudar a explicar el impacto de hepatitis C y los paso que se toman para curarse. Por estas situaciones muchos pacientes de hepatitis C no están buscan la ayuda necesaria para curarse.
Por estas razones fue que coji mas interés y hoy en día sirve como Navegación de pacientes (Peer Outreach Navigation) para Evergreen Health. En mi posición yo trato de asegurarme que todo en la are de Buffalo puedan ser examinados y puedan saber cual es el próximo paso para tratamiento. Es muy importante que podamos identificar y ofrecer la ayuda para ayudar a los pacientes de Hepatitis C. Pero en especial a la comunidad Latina. Así es como único vamos a poder eliminar el Hepatitis C en el estado de Nueva York.
