NVHR, Hepatitis Education Project, NASTAD, Hep B United, and HepVu are joining together to gather insight and data on the barriers to viral hepatitis prevention and care during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Washington, D.C. (June 25, 2020) – The National Viral Hepatitis Roundtable (NVHR), a national coalition working to eliminate viral hepatitis, today launched a public survey to gather insight and data on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on hepatitis prevention and care. The survey was launched in conjunction with the Hepatitis Education Project (HEP), NASTAD, Hep B United, and HepVu, aligned viral hepatitis advocacy and research organizations.

“There are millions of Americans living with viral hepatitis who are at greater risk for complications from COVID-19,” said NVHR Director Lauren Canary. “This survey provides a critical opportunity to hear directly from communities that may be disproportionately impacted by COVID-19 and viral hepatitis, ultimately allowing us to create a data-driven plan to combat public health disparities.”

The anonymous survey is open to anyone with a lived experience with viral hepatitis. Specifically, the survey is looking for responses from the following:

§  Patients, survivors, caregivers, and persons at risk;

§  Clinical provider or healthcare team member;

§  Community based organization or partner; and

§  Health department team members.

Aggregated findings from survey responses may be used to inform strategies to better serve the viral hepatitis community, as well as to inform federal partners, policymakers, and state officials of the challenges facing the hepatitis community and the resources needed to best serve those impacted by viral hepatitis.

“The results of this survey may help demonstrate the extent that comprehensive care is needed for viral hepatitis, including syringe services programs and other harm reduction services, which have not been supported in COVID-19 relief legislation,” added Canary.
