National Viral Hepatitis Roundtable (NVHR) Statement on Signing of Bipartisan Legislation to Combat the Opioid Crisis and Opioid Related Infectious Diseases

Oakland, CA – (October 24, 2018) – National Viral Hepatitis Roundtable (NVHR) Interim Executive Director Tina Broder today released the following statement applauding U.S. President Trump for signing the Support for Patients and Communities Act of 2018:

The National Viral Hepatitis Roundtable (NVHR) applauds President Trump for signing H.R. 6, SUPPORT for Patients and Communities Act, which will directly address the dangerous impact of the opioid and viral hepatitis epidemics in the U.S. A rise in injectable opioid use has led to a 400 percent increase in new hepatitis C infections, therefore a comprehensive plan to test and treat the 5 million individuals living with hepatitis B and C is an essential priority for ending the opioid crisis in the United States. H.R. 6 will provide $40 million annually for the next five years to communities across America that have been impacted by the opioid epidemic to bolster the surveillance system, help better handle infection outbreaks, and respond more effectively to drive down the rates of new infections. This bipartisan legislation is a crucial step toward ensuring that more individuals impacted by the threats of opioid injection drug use and viral hepatitis have access to lifesaving resources and treatment.”
